We live closes to the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, so we naturally started there. I grew up in the parish next to this mission, and remember my parents taking us to daily mass in there (they had that rare early evening daily mass). This one is, in my mind, the mission that most looks like a prototypic mission. But this could be because I grew up around here. The mission was founded in 1771. Being here produces such a sense of awe at what was done here. And this was before the American Revolution. There is beauty, but you can see the spartan life these people lived. The bell wall from San Gabriel practically defines the mission look. The bell wall concept was used in the new Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral for the Los Angeles Diocese.
