Of the books you haven't heard of, I can recommend Blindness by Jose Saramago. It's translated from Portuguese and is in a kind of stream of consciousness format, which I thought would be bad but which I came to appreciate. It's the story of an epidemic sickness in which people spontaneously go blind. It follows a blind man and his wife who pretends to be blind in order to stay with him when he is sent off to quarantine. It deals with the heights and depths to which humanity goes when faced with extreme circumstances.
