Photo: Sun through smoke of California fires

The image is of the sun in the afternoon (about 4PM) on October 23. We are about 25 miles from where the closest Southern California fires were, but the smoke hung over the entire region for at least two weeks. The orange glow and smell of smoke added to a surreal sense during that time. This picture was taken well before sunset, but the smoke darkened the skies considerably.

I find it interesting that something beautiful, like the colors around the sun can come from something so devastating.
