It is sad to see Senator Kennedy die. He was an icon of a great family. While I did not agree with him on a some extremely important issues, I nonetheless am saddened at his passing. The Anchoress has a well written article that captures my sentiment well,  and I point you there.
The Anchoress

Most Christians will, I think, understand that “the favors of the Lord are not exhausted, his mercies not over and done” and will simply pray in hopes that Kennedy had made a contrite and humble confession of his failings and sins.

I pray for him. I pray that he made a good confession, was anointed, received vaiticum and was fully reconciled to the Church.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
